Jebao / Jecod Pump Troubleshooting Guide
Jebao and Jecod DC pumps are widely used in reef aquariums due to their efficiency and controllability. Like all aquarium equipment, occasional questions or issues may arise. Below are the most common situations we see and the recommended solutions.
Jebao Wavemakers & Powerheads | Jebao Water Pumps
Power Consumption or Wattage Fluctuating
Issue
Customers notice the wattage reading on the controller or power monitor constantly changing.
Cause
This is normal behavior for DC pumps. Power consumption changes in real time depending on:
-
Water pressure
-
Plumbing resistance
-
Head height
-
Flow conditions in the aquarium
Solution
-
No action is required if the pump is running normally.
-
The wattage displayed is real-time power usage, not a fixed value.
-
Minor fluctuations are expected and normal.
Pump Not Starting
Issue
The pump does not start immediately or requires several attempts.
Possible Causes
-
Debris in the impeller chamber
-
Calcium buildup
-
Impeller misalignment
-
Power supply issue
Solution
-
Turn off and unplug the pump.
-
Remove and inspect the impeller.
-
Clean the impeller chamber.
-
Soak parts in vinegar if calcium buildup is present.
-
Reassemble and restart the pump.
Pump Running but Low Flow
Issue
The pump is running but the flow rate appears weaker than expected.
Possible Causes
-
Dirty or obstructed impeller
-
Plumbing restrictions
-
Air trapped in the pump
-
Excessive head height
Solution
-
Clean the pump and impeller.
-
Check plumbing for blockages or restrictions.
-
Ensure the pump intake is unobstructed.
-
Verify the installation height and plumbing configuration.
Controller Not Responding
Issue
Buttons on the controller do not respond or the pump stops reacting to adjustments.
Possible Causes
-
Loose cable connections
-
Controller malfunction
-
Moisture exposure
Solution
-
Check all cable connections.
-
Unplug the system and power cycle the pump.
-
Ensure all connections are dry and secure.
-
Replace the controller if necessary.
Pump Making Noise or Rattling
Issue
Unusual noise such as clicking, rattling, or vibration.
Possible Causes
-
Debris in the impeller
-
Worn ceramic shaft
-
Misaligned impeller
-
Pump touching glass or sump walls
Solution
-
Remove and clean the pump.
-
Inspect the impeller and ceramic shaft.
-
Ensure rubber feet or mounts are properly installed.
-
Reinstall the impeller correctly.
Pump Stopping Randomly
Issue
The pump occasionally stops running and then restarts.
Possible Causes
-
Overheating protection
-
Controller issue
-
Power supply instability
-
Debris restricting the impeller
Solution
-
Clean the pump thoroughly.
-
Check the power supply and connections.
-
Inspect the impeller for obstructions.
-
Restart the pump after cleaning.
Pump Not Achieving Rated Flow
Issue
The pump does not seem to reach the advertised flow rate.
Explanation
Manufacturer flow ratings are measured at zero head height under ideal conditions.
Real-world installations reduce flow due to:
-
Vertical head pressure
-
Plumbing elbows
-
Pipe diameter
-
Equipment restrictions
Solution
-
This is normal in most aquarium setups.
-
Optimize plumbing where possible to improve flow.
Pump Becoming Louder Over Time
Issue
The pump becomes louder after several months of operation.
Possible Causes
-
Calcium buildup
-
Impeller wear
-
Ceramic shaft wear
Solution
-
Perform a vinegar soak cleaning.
-
Replace the impeller assembly if necessary.
